Seven Ways to Be More Productive

Online Students

  1. Prioritize. On your drive into work (or bike ride, walk, etc.) think about what your main goals of the day are. Choose the three most important tasks you want to accomplish during the day. Don’t allow yourself to get bogged down by other duties until you’ve completed all three.
  2. Create routines. What’s the first thing you do when you go into work? How about the second? The third? Try doing different tasks at different times and see what works best for you. Once you figure it out, stick to it! Having a routine will take the guesswork out of your day.
  3. Understand your body’s timetable. Keep your body’s internal schedule in mind when you’re establishing your daily routine. Are you most alert in the morning, and more sluggish in the afternoon? Or is it vice versa? Pay attention to your energy levels. Plan to do mentally or physically strenuous tasks when your energy level is at its peak.
  4. Get enough sleep. Without enough sleep, it doesn’t matter what your body’s internal timetable is, you’ll probably feel sluggish all day. Studies show that a sleep deficiency inhibits decision making, problem solving, and emotional coping. Adults need seven to nine hours of sleep every night.
  5. Delegate. Regardless of your position in your company, you can still delegate responsibility. Instead of accepting every project that comes your way, suggest another member of your team take on the task. Juggling too many duties will leave you feeling overwhelmed and will decrease overall productivity.
  6. Schedule e-mail checks. Do you get sidetracked every time a new e-mail comes to your inbox? Log out! Instead of reading every message as soon as it arrives, check your e-mail every hour (or whatever is appropriate for you and your position). You’ll be interrupted less and, as a result, accomplish more.
  7. Take breaks. Don’t expect to work nine hours a day without a single wasted minute. Occasional breaks throughout the day can recharge you and increase productivity. Go for a walk around the office, chat with a coworker, grab a coffee. Breaks are not a waste of time; you’ll feel energized when it’s time to get back to work.
