Men’s Basketball: Bowdoin Tops Saint Joseph’s, 81-70

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The in-state rivals matched up well for the better part of the first half as Bowdoin held a 26-21 lead with just over six minutes left in the opening frame. But the Polar Bears went on to claim their first double-digit advantage with a 9-0 run, which was capped on a Cole Hanin (Bethesda, Md.) layup with the visitors on top, 35-21, with 3:40 before the break.

Bowdoin maintained at least an eight-point lead for the remainder of the contest and held a game-high 19-point (65-46) cushion after Hanin converted a layup with 8:19 remaining in the game.

STATS OF THE GAME:

The Polar Bears shot 49.2% (31-63) from the field with a 44.8% (13-29) clip from three-point distance while the Monks posted efforts of 36.5% (27-74) and 30.8% (12-39) from the floor and beyond the arc, respectively.

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH’S:

  • Senior guard Griffin Foley (Portland, Maine) scored a career-high 30 points with three rebounds and two steals
  • Junior Drew Shea (Mount Desert Island, Maine) notched a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds and added three assists and three blocked shots in the loss
  • Senior forward David Keohan (West Newfield, Maine) came off the bench to score 10 points with three boards and a pair of steals
  • Senior guard Nicholas Curtis (Windham, Maine) chipped in with seven points, seven caroms, three assists, and two steals

LEADERS – BOWDOIN:

  • Sophomore guard Michael Simonds (Falmouth, Maine) tallied 22 points, seven rebounds, two assists, and a pair of blocked shots
  • Junior guard Manav Randhawa (Ajax, Ont.) came off the bench to score 22 points
  • Hanin nearly notched a triple-double with 13 points, eight rebounds, and eight assists and added four steals
  • Junior forward Jack Shea (Glastonbury, Conn.) added 10 points, five boards, two steals, and two blocked shots

With the setback, Saint Joseph’s falls to 11-16 all-time versus Bowdoin College.
