Monks Win Three Slalom Events with Four Individual Triumphs

Jan. 23 — The Saint Joseph’s College alpine ski teams enjoyed a remarkable day in United States Collegiate Ski & Snowboard Association (USCSA) Reynolds Division action at Lost Valley on Sunday. With both teams competing in two slalom races, the women earned a pair of convincing victories while the men notched one win and a fourth-place finish.

The SJC women won the first race with seven place points and a 3:30.62 composite time – well ahead of runner-up UMaine-Orono (18 points, 3:55.79) – and completed the sweep with six place points and a 3:39.60 total time in the second race. UMaine-Orono finished in a distant second with 35 points and a 5:24.25 time.

The Monks’ men topped UMaine-Farmington in the first slalom race with nine place points and a 3:03.76 aggregate time compared to the Beavers’ 18 points and 3:09.21 effort. In the nightcap, Saint Joseph’s finished fourth with 43 points and a 4:09.87 performance.

Sophomores Courtney Pingree (Marblehead, Mass.) and Liam Strobeck (Charlotte, Vt.) highlighted the day with two individual wins apiece while freshman Madelyn Zordan (New Hartford, Conn.) and sophomore Caleb Gorton (Goffstown, N.H.) both found the podium for the first time in their collegiate careers after posting third-place finishes in the day’s first race.

THE RUNDOWN – WOMEN (RACE 1)

  • Pingree placed first with a 1:06.18 time
  • Zordan was third with a 1:10.09 effort
  • Sophomore Maeghan Perkins (Turner, Maine) placed fifth (1:14.35)
  • Senior Sarah Hotchkiss (New Durham, N.H.) finished 10th (1:18.42)
  • Freshman Lilly Souweine (Bangor, Maine) was 13th (1:22.99)
  • Sophomore Erica Irvin (Windham, N.H.) placed 15th (1:24.22)

THE RUNDOWN – WOMEN (RACE 2)

  • Pingree won yet again with a 1:07.91 effort
  • Irvin finished fourth with a 1:13.73 composite time
  • Perkins placed fifth with a 1:17.96 performance
  • Hotchkiss was 10th (1:19.84)
  • Souweine finished 12th (1:27.94)
  • Zordan placed 14th (1:35.10)

THE RUNDOWN – MEN (RACE 1)

  • Strobeck won his first of two races with a 59.09 collective time
  • Gorton placed third with a 1:01.36 effort
  • Sophomore Aidan Wolfinger (Bedford, N.H.) finished fifth (1:03.31)

THE RUNDOWN – MEN (RACE 2)

  • Strobeck picked up his second win of the day with a 1:02.89 performance
  • Gorton finished 12th (1:10.13)
  • Wolfinger posted a DNF on both runs
