Women’s Basketball defeats Colby-Sawyer; Men’s Basketball falls to Chargers

Saint Joseph’s Defeats Colby-Sawyer, 86-41

2/15/22 – Saint Joseph’s College (19-4, 13-2 GNAC) breezed past Colby-Sawyer College (2-17, 2-11 GNAC), 86-41, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women’s basketball action on Mike McDevitt Court at the Harold Alfond Center on Tuesday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Monks held the lead for all but the opening minutes, as the Chargers’ only advantage of the evening came on their first possession of the night when junior guard Emily Parent (Oakland, Maine) hit a three-pointer to make it a 3-2 game 24 seconds in.

Saint Joseph’s took control from this point forward, as the hosts capped the first quarter on a 23-5 run and kicked off the second stanza with a commanding 25-8 cushion. Six different SJC players scored in the first quarter with sophomore guard Hailey Anderson (Beverly, Mass.) leading the effort by netting eight in just three minutes off the bench.

The Monks continued to dominate in the second frame and attained a 38-12 lead after sophomore guard Nina Howe (York, Maine) hit a jumper with 4:36 before the break.

After senior guard Cassandra Stapelfeld (Brookline, N.H.) converted a three-point play with a freebie with six seconds on the clock, St. Joe’s headed into intermission with a 30-point (50-20) advantage. The Monks shot a scorching 72.7% (8-11) from three-point distance in the first half.

St. Joe’s held a 74-28 lead after the third quarter and claimed a game-high 50-point (78-28) lead when freshman Hanna Webster (Alvin, Texas) made a jump shot with 9:32 left in the fourth frame.

BEYOND THE BOX:

The Monks broke the program’s single-game three-point shooting percentage record with a 59.1% (13-22) clip as six different players hit on at least one trifecta on the evening. The former record of 57.9% (11-19) was set in a win over Colby College on December 5th, 2019.

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH’S:

  • Stapelfeld led the Monks with 19 points and added six rebounds and three assists
  • Sophomore guard Angelica Hurley (Groveland, Mass.) netted 18 with four assists and three boards
  • Anderson added 15 points and three caroms
  • Junior forward Jayne Howe (Pembroke, Mass.) grabbed 12 rebounds and added five points and three assists

NCAA M. BASKETBALL: Chargers Tip Monks, 94-83

2/15/22 – Colby-Sawyer College (9-13, 6-10 GNAC) outlasted Saint Joseph’s College (7-17, 6-10 GNAC), 94-83, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men’s basketball action on Mike McDevitt Court at the Harold Alfond Center on Tuesday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The teams traded the lead on 12 occasions and played to four tie scores in the conference bout, but the Chargers took the advantage for good – as it played out – when junior forward Omar Boone (Colorado City, Texas) converted a layup make it a 47-46 game with 1:06 left in the first half.

Colby-Sawyer put the game out of reach early in the second stanza by posting a 10-0 run out of the locker room, as a Zack Caraballo (Salem, N.H.) layup lifted the visitors to a 59-48 cushion with 16:11 remaining. Saint Joseph’s cut the deficit down to four points (72-68) when senior guard Nicholas Curtis (Windham, Maine) hit a jump shot with 7:33 left, but the Chargers answered with an 11-3 outbreak, which was capped by a pair of free throws from Boone and gave the visitors a game-high 12-point (83-71) advantage with 3:45 on the clock.

STATS OF THE GAME:

The Chargers shot 60.7% (34-56) from the floor and 85% (17-20) from the FT line in the victory…The Monks countered by shooting 43.2% (35-18) from the field and a 1-for-3 effort from the charity stripe…Colby-Sawyer scored 22 points on 14 SJC turnovers.

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH’S:

  • Curtis led all scorers with 27 points and pulled down three rebounds in the loss
  • Senior guard Griffin Foley (Portland, Maine) added 16 points and six boards
  • Freshman guard Julian Llopiz (Boston, Mass.) came off the bench to tally 13 points and eight rebounds
  • Freshman guard Teagan Hynes (York, Maine) chipped in with 12 points and four caroms
  • Junior forward Drew Shea (Mount Desert Island, Maine) contributed seven points, five rebounds, and three assists
