Women’s Basketball: Monks Rout Wildcats, 94-53

2/12/22 – PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Saint Joseph’s College (18-4, 12-2 GNAC) toppled Johnson & Wales University (2-17, 2-11 GNAC), 94-53, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women’s basketball contest on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Monks opened the game with 13 unanswered points and held a 23-13 lead heading into the second stanza. With 6:48 left before intermission, St. Joe’s staked a 36-15 cushion on the heels of a 13-2 run.

Saint Joseph’s enjoyed a 50-22 halftime lead and, with the help of 13 third-quarter points from sophomore guard Angelica Hurley (Groveland, Mass.), scored 30 in the penultimate period en route to claiming an 80-36 advantage heading into the final frame.

Hurley hit a layup with 8:06 left in the fourth quarter to lift her team to a game-high 46-point (84-38) cushion.

BEYOND THE BOX:

The Monks shot a season-high 57.6% (34-59) from the field – the team’s best shooting rate since making 60% (42-70) of their bids in win over Rivier on December 9th, 2017…The team’s 80 points through three quarters is the most netted over three periods since the Royal Blue held an 81-52 advantage over JWU on February 19th, 2019.

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH’S:

  • Hurley led all scorers with 24 points and pulled down five rebounds
  • Senior guard Cassandra Stapelfeld (Brookline, N.H.) netted 19 points with three boards, two assists, and a pair of steals
  • Senior forward Kaleigh Walsh (Windham, N.H.) was 6-for-8 from the floor with 14 points, six rebounds, and two steals
  • Junior forward Jayne Howe (Pembroke, Mass.) scored nine points with three steals and two caroms
  • Sophomore guards Hailey Anderson (Beverly, Mass.) and Hannah Talon (Windham, Maine) added seven points apiece
