Sarah Comtois ’18 was the recipient of the New England Emmy award for the 2022 most outstanding Director Live or Recorded Live. Sarah is the Tech Director and Production Assistant for News Center Maine in Portland. Sarah earned her Bachelor of Science in Communications – New Media with a minor in Journalism from Saint Joe’s.

Ryan W. Patrie ’12 was recently appointed the principal for grades 3-5 at Falmouth Elementary School. He has a degree in elementary and special education from Montana State University, a master’s degree in educational leadership from Saint Joseph’s College, and a doctorate in educational leadership from the University of New England.

Wendy Clayton ’18 has joined Penn State Health/St. Joseph Medical Center as its new chief nursing officer. She has served the hospital for more than 10 years, originally as a critical care staff nurse and will be responsible for oversight of all nursing activities and clinical operations. She earned her diploma in nursing at Reading Hospital School of Health Sciences, a bachelor’s degree from West Chester University and a master’s in nursing from Saint Joseph’s College of Maine.

Vanessa Mugica ’17 has joined Pardee UNC Health Care as a certified Nurse Practitioner. She has more than 10 years of surgical experience as a certified perioperative nurse practitioner in a variety of surgical fields. Vanessa earned her masters in nursing as a FNP from Saint Joseph’s College and is board certified by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners and the Competency & Credentialing Institute. She currently resides in North Carolina.

Danielle Deal ’22 – Pen Bay Medical Center has announced that Danielle Deal, RN has joined the Pen Bay Cancer Care Center. Danielle worked as a nurse at the center before entering the family nurse practitioner program at Saint Joseph’s College. As part of her training at Saint Joe’s, Danielle worked with patients at Lincolnville Regional Health Center, Pen Bay Women’s Health, and Pen Bay Pediatrics.

Officer Ahmed Dorghoud ’14 is a member of the Third District’s MB Tac team and has been awarded multiple commendations, unit citations, and awards over the past several months. In addition, Officer Dorghoud is extremely professional and a role model for everyone at the District. He has been with the DC Metro Police for a number of years now and later this month will be awarded the DC Metro Police Officer of the Year.

Tyler B. Black ’20 – The American Institute of CPAs recently awarded the 2021 Elijah Watts Sells Award to Tyler Black, a Salisbury accountant at Alan F. Burke, CPA, PA. Tyler Black was the recipient of the annual award, which is given to candidates who pass all four sections of the Uniform CPA examination on the first attempt with a cumulative average score above 95.50. More than 72,000 individuals sat for the CPA Exam with only 57 meeting the criteria for the Elijah Watts Sells Award. Black began prerequisite work in accounting at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College in 2017 and earned a master’s of accountancy from St. Joseph’s College of Maine in 2020.

Obituaries

Rena Pomerleau ’57 passed away April 27, 2022. Rena graduated from the Mercy School of Nursing, training in both Maryland and Maine. After raising her son, Rena returned to work in the infirmary at the Sisters of Mercy convent until her retirement.

Barbara Brackett Mears ’00 passed away June 7, 2022, after a courageous battle with cancer. Barbara earned her BSN from Saint Joseph’s and went on to work as a hospice nurse with Androscoggin Home Health. She was a proud supporter of organ and tissue donation and was both a donor and a recipient.

Joan Savage ’05 passed away November 1, 2021. She earned her teaching degree from Saint Joseph’s and went on to earn her master’s from Walden University. Joan served the Maine Public School System for many years, with her last position as the STEM teacher for Farwell Elementary. She also worked as a circulation assistant at the Auburn Public Library.

Carol Kwapien ’90 passed away June 3, 2022. She graduated from the Springfield Hospital School of Nursing and worked as a registered nurse at St. Francis Hospital in Honolulu and Wesson Women’s Hospital in Springfield, MA. Carol earned a BS from Saint Joseph’s and a Master of Science in Complementary & Alternative Medicine. She was a gifted and gentle healer throughout her career.

Barbara Menchek Lovrinic ’85 passed away on June 7, 2022, in Doylestown, PA. She earned her RN from the Helene Fuld School of Nursing in Trenton, NJ and went on to earn a BSPA degree in Psychology from Saint Joseph’s College. Barbara served many years as the director of nursing at the Odd Fellows Care Center in Trenton, NJ. She loved traveling and volunteering in her community.

Patricia Beck Powell ’49, who was 95, passed away on June 10, 2022. She lived her entire life in her family home in Portland, Maine. After attending St. Joseph’s Academy, she went on to earn her degree from Saint Joseph’s College. Pat began her career working for the Department of Parks & Recreation in Portland; later she became Portland’s first Director of Adult Daycare at the Barron Center in the 1980’s when it was one of the first programs of its kind.
