Recently promoted to CEO of a Maine hospital, Chrissy articulates the issues related to healthcare in a critical access hospital and how Covid-19 is impacting them, and describes the challenges she faced.

As a leader of an independent healthcare facility it is important to seek continued growth and skills that can address changing environments and provide for new and innovative methods of leadership. Nothing has illustrated that more than this Pandemic. The resiliency, awareness and support that our team needs to continue this ongoing battle of this disease with the heightened sense of urgency and anxiety has been part of my learning and emersion in the MHA curriculum to find opportunities to help and navigate these uncharted healthcare arena’s with courage and support of our team and our patients.

Understanding all aspect of the healthcare delivery system based on the curriculum of my MHA has been impactful for leading during change, especially the work of mastering effective leadership. My new role as the President and CEO has been built around the four principles of leadership supporting effective care, efficient care delivery systems, empowerment of patients, families and our workforce and identifying the key needs of our community or ecosystem to remain relevant to the communities perspectives of health and vibrancy.

As a rural safety net provider our key challenges were taking care of our workforce and community. We are also the leader for public health in the community we serve, this required partnerships with municipalities, chambers of commerce, schools systems and park systems to prepare and educate the community on prevention, mitigation and safety surrounding the spread of COVID-19. We serve a coastal tourist destination that is home to one of the most visited National Parks, Acadia, in the US in order to promote safety and balance that with the mitigating economic impact to our local businesses we were challenged to be innovated in prevention ideas and were very successful, reporting less than a 2% positivity rate with over 3M visitors. The work that I am doing to understand leadership, stages of growth and building teams has been essential to our success.
