Saint Joseph’s College (6-6, 2-0 GNAC) kicked off Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play with a pair of wins over Norwich University (3-9, 2-6 GNAC) on Sunday afternoon. The Monks opened with an 11-3 win and completed the sweep with a 7-3 triumph in the nightcap.

GAME ONE – Saint Joseph’s 11, Norwich 3 (6 inn.)

Saint Joseph’s broke a scoreless stalemate with three runs on four hits in the bottom of the third, when freshman right fielder Taylor Owen (Wakefield, Mass.) doubled home a pair and immediately scored when the following batter, sophomore shortstop Olivia Howe (Saco, Maine) singled to right-center.

St. Joe’s proceeded to clinch the mercy-rule win after Tighe roped a two-run single in the fifth and junior catcher Bailey Rassol (Rehoboth, Mass.) sent Owens across the plate with a single in the sixth.

GAME TWO – Saint Joseph’s 7, Norwich 3

The Monks struck first with two runs off a Makayla Cooper (Fryeburg, Maine) single in the bottom of the first but the Cadets utilized a small-ball approach to claim a 3-2 edge over the next two frames, as Biello knocked in a run on a sac bunt in the second and Beebe and Rasmussen both scored on sac flies in the top of the third to five the visitors a 3-2 lead.

St. Joe’s tied the game in the bottom of the third when Owen scored on a Megan Eagleston (Reading, Mass.) sacrifice fly and grabbed the lead when two runs scored on a throwing error on a stolen base attempt. The Monks capped the game scoring in the bottom of the sixth when Martin launched a line-drive two-run homer over the right field wall to account for the 7-3 final.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Johnson & Wales University (4-3, 3-2 GNAC) edged Saint Joseph’s College (5-2, 1-1 GNAC), 12-11 in overtime, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women’s lacrosse contest on Saturday afternoon.

The Wildcats held a 6-1 lead with 12:22 left in the first half but the Monks cut their deficit to 6-4 with goals from Josie Ring (Newfield, Maine), Liz Callahan (Scarborough, Maine), and Lydia Dexter (Oakland, Maine) in a matter of two minutes and trailed 7-4 heading into intermission.

Johnson & Wales led 9-6 after Dani Lydecker netted her fourth of five goals on the day at the 21:00 mark of the second stanza, but St. Joe’s rattled off four unanswered tallies as freshman Cailyn Wesley (Peabody, Mass.) netted an unassisted marker to lift the visitors to a 10-9 edge with 10:18 remaining in regulation.

Lydecker and Marley Medina struck for the hosts to stake the Wildcats to an 11-10 lead with 6:03 left before Dexter scored her third goal of the afternoon exactly three minutes later to knot the game at 11-11 and eventually force an extra frame.

Saint Joseph’s College (16-11, 6-2 GNAC) won a pair of Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) contests versus Rivier University (0-6, 0-6 GNAC) at Larry Mahaney Diamond on Saturday afternoon. The Monks opened the day with a 6-1 victory and completed the sweep with a 4-0 triumph.

GAME ONE – Saint Joseph’s 6, Rivier 1

The Monks secured a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second, when senior catcher Matthew Martinello (Woodbridge, Conn.) singled home a run and later scored on a bases-loaded walk issued to senior second baseman Luke Johnson (East Hampton, Conn.). Sandwiched between these plays was a run scored by senior right fielder Dylan Fournier (South Windsor, Conn.), who reached on an error and crossed the plate on another infield miscue.

Saint Joseph’s immediately responded with two runs off three hits in the bottom of the fifth, as freshman Luke Stephens (Glastonbury, Conn.) doubled home graduate student Ben Gravel (Rochester, N.H.) and later scored on a two-out single up the middle off the bat of junior third baseman Ronan Chisholm (North Chatham, Mass.) to lift the hosts to a 5-1 advantage.

The Monks capped the scoring in the bottom of the sixth when sophomore shortstop Zach Miles (Concord, N.H.) was hit by a pitch, stole second, and advanced 180 on successive passed balls.

GAME TWO – Saint Joseph’s 4, Rivier 0

The Monks received all the offensive production they would require with two out in the bottom of the first, when sophomore catcher Jackson Stanton (Saugus, Mass.) belted a three-run homer over the left field wall. The hit was the first of the nightcap for the Monks, as Johnson and Gravel both reached via base on balls and trotted home on Stanton’s second long ball of the season.

St. Joe’s tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth when sophomore Jonathan Dube (Rochester, N.H.) tripled to right-center and promptly scored on a Dawson Gundlah (York, Maine) sac fly.

With two out in the top of the seventh, Rivier managed to load the bases on a pair of singles and a hit batsman, but senior reliever Jonathan Marchia (Chicopee, Mass.) bucked down to strike out junior Corey Cochran (Salem, N.H.) to close out the contest.
