A Conversation on Anti-Asian American Pacific Islander Discrimination

As part of Momentum: A Maine Racial & Social Equity Series, the Chamber, GPCOG, United Way of Greater Portland, the Portland Public Library, and the Maine Historical Society are bringing you a panel discussion on anti-Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) discrimination in Maine.
Topics to be discussed:
- An overview of the Asian American and Pacific Islander history and migration in Maine
- Breaking down AAPI stereotypes and microaggressions
- How the AAPI Community responds differently and why
- The concept of “othering” and how communities can be more welcoming.
- The importance of representation in leadership and management positions across all industries
- Cultural frameworks that cause a marginalized person to be disadvantaged
- The importance of people in power being active allies
- How AAPI people are adjacent to whiteness but perpetual foreigners
- The intersection of marginalized groups and the silencing of Asian Americans.
