A Conversation on Anti-Asian American Pacific Islander Discrimination
Wednesday, April 21, 5:30-7pm

As part of Momentum: A Maine Racial & Social Equity Series, the Chamber, GPCOG, United Way of Greater Portland, the Portland Public Library, and the Maine Historical Society are bringing you a panel discussion on anti-Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) discrimination in Maine.

Topics to be discussed:

  • An overview of the Asian American and Pacific Islander history and migration in Maine
  • Breaking down AAPI stereotypes and microaggressions
  • How the AAPI Community responds differently and why
  • The concept of “othering” and how communities can be more welcoming.
  • The importance of representation in leadership and management positions across all industries
  • Cultural frameworks that cause a marginalized person to be disadvantaged
  • The importance of people in power being active allies
  • How AAPI people are adjacent to whiteness but perpetual foreigners
  • The intersection of marginalized groups and the silencing of Asian Americans.

Phuc Tran – Author, Educator, Tattoo Artist
Grace Valenzuela – Director, Portland Public Schools Multilingual & Multicultural Center
