March 26th – M. Basketball: Husson 92, Saint Joseph’s 75

BANGOR, Maine – Saint Joseph’s (2-3) mounted several comeback attempts but ultimately fell short in a 92-75 loss at Husson University (9-0) on Friday evening. Senior Jack Casale (Portland, Maine/Cheverus), junior Nicholas Curtis (Windham, Maine), and junior Griffin Foley (Portland, Maine) led the Monks’ offensive effort with 20 points apiece in the setback.

March 26th – W. Basketball: Saint Joseph’s 61, Husson 31

STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph’s College (5-0) shook off a sluggish start to defeat Husson University (5-1), 61-31, at the Harold Alfond Center on Friday evening. Senior guard Cassandra Stapelfeld (Brookline, N.H.) paced the Monks with 16 points while junior guard Alyson Fillion (Bedford, N.H.) tallied 10 points, three boards, and four assists in the victory. Senior forward Jordan Jabar (Waterville, Maine) pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds with six points, four assists, and three blocked shots in her last home contest. During her four years at St. Joe’s, the 2021 team co-captain helped the Monks post an incredible 80-13 (.860) overall record, including a 37-2 (.949) mark in conference play, with a pair of NCAA Tournament berths.

March 27th – M. Lacrosse: Norwich 13, Saint Joseph’s 9

NORTHFIELD, Vt. – Norwich University (2-1) defeated Saint Joseph’s (2-3), 13-9, in what was the 2021 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men’s lacrosse opener for both programs on Saturday afternoon. SJC senior attack Brendan Martin (Nashua, N.H.) led all scorers with five goals while sophomore Max Lacy (Salisbury, N.H.) recorded two goals and an assist while senior Shane Puleo (Nashua, N.H.) tallied a trio of assists. Junior goalkeeper Michael Janocha (Southampton, Mass.) played very well and made a career-high 19 saves in the losing effort.

March 27th – Softball: Saint Joseph’s Splits with Bates College

STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph’s College (2-4) swept a non-conference doubleheader with Bates College (0-2) at Richard W. Bailey Field on Saturday afternoon. The Monks picked up their first win of the young season with a 5-1 triumph in the opener and completed the sweep with a 6-5 victory.

GAME ONE – Saint Joseph’s 5, Bates 1

Senior catcher Megan Eagleston (Reading, Mass.) was 3-3 with three RBI and senior center fielder Meranda Martin (Richmond, Maine) went 2-4 with a run scored to lift the Monks to their first victory of the young season. Sophomore pitcher Meredith Pence (Remington, Va.) earned the win in the circle after giving up one run on five hits and five walks with three strikeouts in a complete-game effort.

GAME TWO – Saint Joseph’s 6, Bates 5

The Monks trailed early but scored five runs in the bottom of the second and held off the Bobcats’ late rally effort to earn the sweep. SJC sophomore starter Sydney Hatch (Newburgh, Maine) picked up the win after allowing five runs on eight hits and two walks in 4.2 innings and sophomore reliever Emily Eagleston (Reading, Mass.) earned the save with 2.1 scoreless innings of relief. Megan Eagleston, Lydia Howarth (Kennebunkport, Maine), and Alexis Downs (Auburn, Maine) notched two hits apiece in the nightcap.

March 27th – Baseball: Saint Joseph’s and Bates College Split Doubleheader

STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph’s College (5-8) split a non-conference doubleheader with Bates College (1-1) at Larry Mahaney Diamond on Saturday afternoon. The Monks opened with a 5-4 triumph and suffered a 6-5 setback in the closing contest.

GAME ONE – Saint Joseph’s 5, Bates 4

The Monks trailed by a 4-2 score going into the bottom of the sixth, when the hosts plated three runs off four hits to secure a one-run advantage. Senior pinch-hitter Kevin Aylward (East Bridgewater, Mass.) led off the inning with a solo home run and, later in the inning, senior left fielder Ben Gravel (Rochester, N.H.) doubled home Hunter Richardson (North Monmouth, Maine) for the game-winning run. Freshman reliever Matt Thibault (Nashua, N.H.) earned the first victory of his NCAA career after tossing 1.1 hitless innings and senior closer Jonathan Marchia (Chicopee, Mass.) picked up his first save of the season – and 10th of his career – after fanning a pair in an inning of work. Gravel was 3-4 with a double, triple, and two RBI, sophomore shortstop Zach Miles (Concord, N.H.) went 3-4 with a run and an RBI, and Richardson added two hits and two runs in four at-bats.

GAME TWO – Bates 6, Saint Joseph’s 5

The Bobcats flipped the script on the Monks in the closing contest with four runs off five hits and an SJC error to claim a 6-5 lead in the top of the fifth. Relievers Brian Berthiaume (New Boston, N.H.), Devan Harrison (Bourne, Mass.) and Marchia combined to toss 2.2 scoreless innings while fanning five batters. Sophomore catcher Jackson Stanton (Saugus, Mass.) was 2-3 with a run, a double, a home run, and two RBI and Gravel went 2-4 with a run and an RBI in the loss.

March 27th – Monks Host First-Ever Track Meet at SJC Athletics Complex

STANDISH, Maine – The Saint Joseph’s College outdoor track & field teams competed in their first ever home meet held at the Saint Joseph’s College Athletics Complex on Saturday. The SJC women placed second with 150 points while the St. Joe’s men finished third with 100 points. The running events were hosted at Saint Joseph’s while University of Southern Maine hosted the throwing events.

Five program records were broken in what was the Monks’ 2021 outdoor season-opener, as first-year Brooklyn Goff (Biddeford, Maine) set a new 400 hurdles mark with 1:15.03 time while also setting a new program best in the high jump with a height of 1.55 meters. Sophomore Simon Vinci (Peabody, Mass.) set two new records in the Shot Put (13.06m) and Discus (37.10) and first-year Sean Wedgewood (Porter, Maine) vaulted for a school record of 3.65m in Pole Vault.

March 28th – W. LACROSSE: Saint Joseph’s 17, Becker College 5

STANDISH, Maine – Junior Lydia Dexter (Oakland, Maine) tallied five goals, seven assists and five caused turnovers to help lift Saint Joseph’s College (2-1) past Becker College (1-2), 17-5, in a non-conference women’s lacrosse contest at the SJC Athletics Complex on Sunday afternoon. Freshman Bridget Collins (Milford, Conn.) scored two goals with two assists, first-year Carson Battaglia (Gorham, Maine) added three goals, four draw controls, and three ground balls, and senior Josie Ring (Newfield, Maine) tallied two goals, six ground balls, five draw controls, and three caused turnovers. Making her college debut in goal, freshman Heather Rohr (Merrimack, N.H.) made a pair of saves with three ground balls and four caused turnovers.

March 28th – W. BASKETBALL: Husson 72, Saint Joseph’s 67

BANGOR, Maine – In what was the abbreviated-season finale for both programs, Husson University (6-1) edged Saint Joseph’s College (5-1), 72-67, in NCAA DIII Women’s Basketball action on Sunday afternoon. Sophomore Jayne Howe led all scorers with 20 points and pulled down seven rebounds, senior guard Cassandra Stapelfeld (Brookline, N.H.) added 14 points with four boards, junior Alyson Fillion (Bedford, N.H.) netted 13 points with three caroms and a pair of assists, and senior Jordan Jabar (Waterville, Maine) pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds and scored eight points in the loss.

March 28th – M. BASKETBALL: Husson 81, Saint Joseph’s 78

STANDISH, Maine – Husson University (10-0) slipped past Saint Joseph’s College (2-4), 81-78, in what was the 2021 abbreviated-season finale for both men’s basketball programs at the Harold Alfond Center on Sunday afternoon. Senior guard Jack Casale (Portland, Maine/Cheverus) registered a double-double with 27 points and 13 rebounds in the contest, which featured 10 lead changes and five tie scores. Junior guard Griffin Foley (Portland, Maine) tallied 15 points, five rebounds, and three assists and sophomore Ian Jennings came off the bench to score 13 points off a 4-for-5 three-point shooting performance.
