Women’s Lacrosse: Monks Shoot Past Lasers, 19-5

3/29/22 – NEWTON, Mass. – Saint Joseph’s College (9-0, 5-0 GNAC) shot past Lasell University (2-5, 2-3 GNAC), 19-5, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) women’s lacrosse action on Tuesday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Monks kicked off the contest with seven unanswered goals in the first 10 minutes of play, a span during which grad student Lydia Dexter (Oakland, Maine) netted three tallies, as the Royal Blue put the game out of reach out of the gates.

Sophomores Bridget Collins (Milford, Conn.) and Carson Battaglia (Gorham, Maine) scored man-up goals in the closing minutes of the second stanza to help the Monks claim their first double-digit (12-2) advantage of the afternoon.

Battaglia capped the third period scoring at the 2:27 mark with an unassisted strike to make it a 15-4 game heading into the fourth and sophomore Cailyn Wesley (Peabody, Mass.) scored twice in the fourth to help the visitors account for the 19-5 final.

TEAM STATS:

Saint Joseph’s held the lead in shots (41-11), shots on goal (33-8), ground balls (39-26) and draw controls (19-9) on the afternoon.

THE KEEPERS:

SJC freshmen Morgan Wright (Chelmsford, Mass.) and Mackenzie Baston (Gray, Maine) split the game in net and combined to make three saves in the victory while Lasell netminder Devin Zambruno turned away 14 shots in a losing effort.

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH’S:

  • Dexter again paced the Monks with five goals, three assists, eight ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers
  • Battaglia scored three goals with 16 draw controls and two ground balls
  • Freshman Mackenzie Siebert (Naples, Maine) added two goals and a pair of assists
  • Collins and Wesley netted three goals apiece
  • Sophomore Megan Mourmouras (Biddeford, Maine) chipped in with a goal and an assist with eight ground balls
