Celebrate Black History Month

Share

February is Black History Month – a dedicated time to learn about and celebrate the important and often overlooked contributions of our African American community. Black History Month can be traced back to 1926 when historian Dr. Carter Woodson launched “Negro History Week.” Fifty years later, in the wake of the civil rights movement, the celebration was expanded to a month and decreed a national observance by President Gerald Ford.

It goes without saying that we cannot and should not sum up all of our appreciation and recognition of Black History into one neat little month, nor one flashy little poster. However, it is our hope that by recognizing this important month and highlighting events that recognize and celebrate black history, we bring to light the jarring reminder that our critical work centered on justice, equity, diversity and inclusion has only just begun. We hope you will join us in the events listed below and continue to recognize black history during this month and every month in your own thoughtful ways and actions.
