4/7/21 – St. Joe’s Blanks #11 Southern Maine, 5-0

GORHAM, Maine – Saint Joseph’s College (9-9) blanked nationally-ranked University of Southern Maine (10-5), 5-0, in non-conference baseball action at Ed Flaherty Field on Wednesday afternoon.

Six different SJC pitchers combined to hold the Huskies – ranked 11th in the latest D3baseball.com national poll – to just four hits (all singles) while the Monks racked up 14 hits and played flawless defense in a total team effort. All nine SJC starters posted at least one hit in the triumph.

Freshman Luke Stephens (Glastonbury, Conn.) was credited with the victory and improves to 2-0 on the season after tossing two innings of one-hit relief with three strikeouts and senior center fielder Hunter Richardson (North Monmouth, Maine) was 3-3 with a run, a double, and two RBI in the victory.

4/7/21 – Monks Swim Past Sharks, 15-6

BOSTON, Mass. – Saint Joseph’s College (5-1) toppled Simmons University (1-1), 15-6, in a non-conference women’s lacrosse contest at Daly Field on Wednesday evening. Junior goalkeeper Madelyn Nelson (Casco, Maine) made 15 saves in the victory.

Junior Lydia Dexter (Oakland, Maine) registered three goals, six assists, two ground balls, and a pair of draw controls and freshman Carson Battaglia (Gorham, Maine) added three goals and six draw controls on the evening.

4/7/21 – Monks Tip Raiders in Overtime Thriller, 16-15

NASHUA, N.H. – Senior Shane Puleo (Nashua, N.H.) tallied five goals and five assists and sophomore Zavier Balzano (Otisfield, Maine) scored with 19 seconds left in the first overtime period to lift Saint Joseph’s College (5-3, 3-1 GNAC) past Rivier University (2-2, 2-2 GNAC), 16-15, in an action-packed Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men’s lacrosse contest on Wednesday evening.

Already safely atop the SJC leaderboard in career assists, Puleo became the first player in program history to reach the 100-career-assist plateau when he notched the helper on a Martin goal with 5:33 left in the fourth quarter. In 47 career games, the senior attack has tallied 65 goals and 101 assists for 166 points – a total that ranks third in team history.

4/10/21 – Monks Kick Off GNAC Play with Two Wins over Lasell

LYNN, Mass. – Saint Joseph’s College (11-9, 2-0 GNAC) rallied from multiple-run deficits in both contests to claim a sweep over Lasell University (4-12, 3-3 GNAC) in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) doubleheader at Fraser Field on Saturday. The Monks, playing their first conference games since the 2019 season, posted an 8-6 win in the first game and capped the day with a 5-3 triumph.

In the opener, the Monks trailed 6-2 through five frames but managed to overcome the Lasers with six runs off three hits and a Lasell error in the top of the sixth. Left fielder Ben Gravel (Rochester, N.H.) tied the game with a two-run double to left center and promptly scored the eventual game-winning run when first baseman Drew Healey (Rochester, N.H.) singled to center.

In the closing contest, St. Joe’s faced a 3-1 deficit going into the top of the fourth when the SJC bats swung for three runs off three hits to secure a 4-3 edge. Healey and freshman designated hitter Luke Stephens (Glastonbury, Conn.) both roped RBI doubles and senior second baseman Luke Johnson (East Hampton, Conn.) gave the visitors the lead with an RBI single.

4/10/21 – SJC Men & Women Finish Third at Second Home Meet

STANDISH, Maine – The Saint Joseph’s College outdoor track & field teams competed in their final home meet at the Saint Joseph’s College Athletics Complex on Saturday. Both the Men and Women’s Teams placed third with 117 points for the women and 98 for the men. The running events were hosted at Saint Joseph’s while University of Southern Maine hosted the throwing events.

MEN:

  • Sophomore Simon Vinci (Peabody, Mass.) placed first in the Hammer throw (39.70m), second in the discus (39.07), and sixth in the Javelin (32.75m)
  • Junior captain Troy Hendricks (Hiram, Maine) placed fourth in the 1500 breaking his previously held school record with a time of 4:16.01

WOMEN:

  • Sophomore Kelsey Kennedy (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) dominated the 1500m placing first with a time of 5:17.97 she also placed fourth in the 800m (2:32.7)
  • Freshman Brooklyn Goff (Biddeford, Maine) raced for a first-place finish flying over the 400m hurdles (1:12.29) and a third-place finish in the 100 Hurdles (17.50) and jumped 1.48m in High Jump for fifth

4/11/21 – Grant PK Strike Lifts Monks Past Bengals in Spring Season Opener, 3-2

STANDISH, Maine – Senior Colin Grant (Harvard, Mass.) scored the game-winning goal on a PK attempt with 6:19 remaining in regulation to lift Saint Joseph’s College past UMaine-Fort Kent, 3-2, in a spring men’s soccer game at the SJC Athletics Complex on Sunday afternoon.

Senior Quinn Hewitt (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) and junior Austin Ward (North Andover, Mass.) both scored in the first half while SJC goalkeepers David Walbridge (Hampden, Mass.) and sophomore Michael Sheridan (Folsom, Pa.) combined to make three saves in the victory.

4/11/21 – Monks & Bulldogs Split GNAC Twinbill

FRANKLIN, Mass. – Saint Joseph’s College (12-10, 3-1 GNAC) split a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) baseball doubleheader with Dean College (3-1, 3-1 GNAC) on Sunday afternoon. The Monks fell by a 9-3 score in the opener and topped the Bulldogs by a 10-7 margin in the second game.

In the first game, junior starter George Welch (Derry, N.H.) took the loss after allowing five runs (one earned) off five hits and a walk with five strikeouts over three innings while freshman Luke Stephens (Glastonbury, Conn.) was 2-4 with a double and two RBI and senior right fielder Dylan Fournier (South Windsor, Conn.) scored a pair of runs.

In the second game, senior reliever Zach Ham (Saco, Maine) picked up the win after tossing two one-hit innings with a pair of strikeouts while left fielder Ben Gravel (Rochester, N.H.) was 4-4 with a double, two runs scored, and a stolen base and Stephens, Fournier, and Richardson notched three hits apiece.
